Lettuce root aphid

The lettuce root aphid (Trama troglodytes) is a specialized agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is characterized by its subterranean lifestyle, which makes it a difficult challenge for growers to detect and manage before significant damage occurs.

The primary hosts of Trama troglodytes are plants within the Asteraceae family. Lettuce, chicory, and wild dandelions are the most commonly attacked crops. The aphid colonizes the root zone, creating dense clusters that can severely weaken the host plant's physiological functions.

The biology of this species is heavily dependent on mutualistic relationships with ants. Ants often facilitate the dispersal of aphids between plants and protect them from predators, which significantly enhances the aphid's survival rate and population growth during the active growing season.

Damage is manifested through stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and wilting during periods of moisture stress. Because the aphid feeds directly on the root system, it disrupts the uptake of water and nutrients, often leading to the collapse of the plant if the infestation density is high.
