Pigeon tremex

The Pigeon tremex (Tremex columba) is a species of horntail wasp belonging to the family Siricidae. It is recognized as a significant wood-boring insect that primarily targets stressed or declining hardwood trees. Despite its impressive size and somewhat menacing appearance, this insect is harmless to humans, as it lacks a traditional stinger.

The host range of the Pigeon tremex includes various hardwood species, with a particular preference for maple, elm, oak, beech, ash, and birch trees. While it rarely attacks perfectly healthy trees, it is a frequent secondary pest on trees weakened by drought, disease, fire, or mechanical damage, where it can complete its life cycle successfully.

The biology of this species is fascinating due to its symbiotic relationship with wood-decaying fungi. When the female oviposits, she injects fungal spores into the wood along with her eggs. These fungi create the initial decay necessary for the larvae to digest the wood cellulose. The life cycle typically lasts from one to two years, depending on the temperature and the health of the host tree.

Damage is characterized by the extensive tunneling activity of larvae inside the tree trunk. These galleries are filled with tightly packed frass (wood dust). Externally, the presence of the pest is signaled by perfectly round exit holes on the bark. Heavy infestations significantly compromise the structural integrity of the wood and can accelerate the decline of an already stressed tree.

Integrated pest management strategies for the Pigeon tremex emphasize forest hygiene and environmental control:

• Implementing sanitation logging to remove infested or dead trees before adults emerge to spread to healthy trees.
• Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents, specifically parasitic wasps like Megarhyssa macrurus, which are highly effective at finding and parasitizing horntail larvae within the wood.
• Promoting tree vigor through proper site selection and watering to reduce the number of potential host trees.
• Avoiding the storage of freshly cut logs near healthy woodlots to prevent attracting females during their egg-laying season.
