Description
Systematic position: The Giant woodwasp (Tremex magnus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Siricidae. It is a significant wood-boring insect that affects the stems of various hardwood trees, being a classic example of a pest that thrives in weakened arboreal ecosystems.
Affected crops: This insect primarily targets hardwood tree species such as beech, oak, and hornbeam. It predominantly attacks weakened, stressed, or overmature trees, making it a critical concern for forest management and the timber industry in affected temperate regions.
Biology and life cycle: The female uses a robust ovipositor to deposit eggs deep into the wood. During this process, it introduces fungal spores into the timber, which begin to degrade the wood tissue. These fungi serve as a vital food source for the larvae, which live and develop inside the trunk, creating extensive tunnel networks over a period often lasting several years.
Character of damage and harm: The presence of the pest is marked by circular exit holes and "frass" (sawdust-like excrement) appearing on the bark. The larvae tunnel through the wood, significantly reducing the timber quality. Furthermore, the associated fungal infections lead to decay, which severely weakens the tree's structural integrity and often results in the tree's eventual mortality.
