Description

Taxonomic position of the red flour beetle classifies it within the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles). It is recognized as one of the most significant pests affecting stored products in food processing facilities and warehouses on a global scale.

Crops damaged by this pest include various types of cereal grains, flour, processed grain products, bran, nuts, dried fruits, and even seeds. Because of its size and ability to penetrate small crevices, it is particularly difficult to control in industrial settings, where it often thrives in machinery residues and spillages.

Biology and life cycle are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. The female can lay hundreds of eggs over her lifespan. Under optimal conditions, the transition from egg to adult occurs within approximately 30 days. Adults are capable of flight, which allows them to infest new grain piles or facilities rapidly during warmer seasons.

Nature of damage and economic impact arise from the feeding habits of both larvae and adults. They preferentially attack the germ of the grain, significantly reducing its germination potential. Furthermore, they contaminate the grain mass with toxic secretions, such as quinones, which impart a pungent, unpleasant odor and flavor, rendering the product unmarketable.

Protection measures require a comprehensive approach to pest management. Integrated strategies include:

  • Maintaining high standards of sanitation within storage facilities.
  • Regular cleaning of conveyors and milling equipment to remove dust and debris.
  • Use of temperature management (chilling) to inhibit development.
