Description
Systematic position. The rice hispa (Trichispa sericea) is a member of the order Coleoptera, belonging to the family Chrysomelidae and subfamily Hispinae. This beetle is identified as a primary pest of rice in several African regions, where it poses a significant threat to sustainable grain production systems due to its specialized feeding behavior.
Crops and impact. The primary host plant is rice (Oryza sativa). It can also survive on various wild grass species that serve as alternate hosts. The pest is particularly devastating during the vegetative growth stage of rice, as heavy infestations result in significant reductions in photosynthetic capacity and yield, often leading to stunted plant growth.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the leaf tissue of the rice plant. Upon hatching, larvae immediately commence mining inside the leaves. The entire development process is closely synchronized with the growth cycles of the rice plants and the availability of water in the fields.
Nature of damage. Adults scrape the epidermis of the leaves, leaving white, linear patterns. Larvae feed internally within the leaf tissue, creating irregular, light-colored blotch mines. As the damage progresses, the leaves turn brown and eventually wither. This damage impairs the plant's ability to develop healthy panicles, significantly lowering agricultural output.
