Description

The genus Trichodectes belongs to the order Phthiraptera, family Trichodectidae. These organisms are classified as ectoparasites that affect various mammals. While not agricultural pests of plants, they are significant veterinary pests that impact the profitability of livestock production systems globally.

The primary hosts for these parasites include cattle, dogs, and other domestic animals. They thrive within the hair coat of the host, where they feed on epidermal scales, skin debris, and sebaceous secretions. Unlike blood-sucking lice, biting lice do not pierce the skin but cause significant skin irritation through their constant feeding activity.

The life cycle of Trichodectes is entirely completed on the host animal. Eggs are firmly cemented to individual hair shafts. After hatching, the nymphs go through several developmental stages before becoming sexually mature adults. The environmental conditions near the host's skin provide the warmth and humidity necessary for continuous reproduction.

Infestation symptoms include intense pruritus (itching), hair loss, skin inflammation, and crust formation due to constant scratching. Heavily infested animals often exhibit reduced weight gain, poor coat condition, and high stress levels, which inevitably leads to decreased productivity and weakened natural defenses.

  • Regular grooming and visual inspection of livestock.
  • Application of topical ectoparasiticides (pour-on, spot-on, or sprays).
  • Sanitary maintenance of animal housing and bedding.
  • Quarantine procedures for newly introduced animals.

Effective control requires a combination of chemical treatment and environmental sanitation. Because these lice are host-specific and cannot survive long away from the animal, disinfecting stalls and cleaning grooming equipment is a crucial step to prevent re-infestation after the initial medical treatment of the herd.
