Description

Systematic position: The Ziziphus longhorn beetle (Trichoferus campestris) is a dangerous member of the Cerambycidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. This species is a wood-boring insect that lives hidden inside the tree trunk and branches, making it a significant threat to both forest stands and fruit orchards globally.

Host plants: This pest exhibits a wide polyphagy. It frequently attacks fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, cherry, peach, and apricot. Additionally, it infests various broadleaved trees like oak, elm, maple, willow, and walnut, which makes it difficult to manage when orchards are located in proximity to infested woodlands.

Biology and lifecycle: The beetle's lifecycle typically spans one to two years, influenced heavily by regional climatic conditions. Adult beetles emerge in the summer months, usually from June to August. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices or existing mechanical wounds on trunks and limbs. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark, constructing galleries within the wood and eventually creating a pupal chamber deep inside the tree tissue.

Nature of damage: The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the wood, which disrupts nutrient flow and compromises the mechanical stability of the host tree. A key indicator of an infestation is the accumulation of frass (boring dust) under the bark. Heavily infested trees show reduced vigor, premature leaf yellowing, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to wind breakage. Multiple exit holes in the bark often signify an advanced state of infestation.

Protection measures: Controlling Trichoferus campestris is challenging due to its concealed habitat. Management focuses on strict phytosanitary practices: regular orchard inspections, and the immediate pruning and destruction of infested branches or severely weakened trees. Enhancing tree health through optimal irrigation and fertilization improves natural resistance. During monitoring programs, pheromone traps are utilized to detect adult populations, while targeted insecticide applications on the trunks during the adult flight period can reduce egg-laying pressure.
