Velvety longhorn beetle

The velvety longhorn beetle (Trichoferus holosericeus) is a destructive wood-boring insect belonging to the Cerambycidae family. Widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and parts of Europe, this pest is known for its ability to infest both weakened and seemingly healthy woody plants, causing significant economic damage.

This beetle targets a diverse range of host plants, including various hardwood trees such as oak, beech, walnut, fig, and grapevine. The larvae are the primary cause of damage, as they burrow deep into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries that compromise the structural integrity of the tree.

The biological cycle of this species is prolonged, usually lasting between two to four years. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, emerging during the summer months to mate and oviposit in bark crevices. The larvae hatch and begin their feeding cycle, which remains hidden from view for the majority of their developmental period, making early detection extremely difficult.

The damage caused by Trichoferus holosericeus is characterized by the presence of exit holes and the accumulation of frass (boring dust) on the bark surface or at the base of the tree. Heavily infested trees show symptoms of dieback, yellowing foliage, and structural instability. In fruit orchards, the infestation leads to reduced yield and eventual mortality of the plant.

Management strategies for this pest rely heavily on integrated pest management practices. Key control measures include:

• Sanitation: Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to reduce population density.
• Monitoring: Using pheromone traps or light traps during the adult flight period.
• Preventive treatment: Applying systemic or contact insecticides to the bark of high-value trees during the egg-laying season.
• Cultural practices: Ensuring tree health through proper irrigation and pruning to make them less attractive to ovipositing females.
