Oriental longhorned beetle

The Oriental longhorned beetle (Trirachys orientalis) is a significant wood-boring pest belonging to the Cerambycidae family. As a xylem-feeding insect, it poses a major threat to both forest ecosystems and agricultural plantations. The species has gained notoriety due to its ability to cause severe structural damage to host trees and its capacity to spread to new geographic regions.

This pest affects a diverse range of broad-leaved woody plants. Preferred hosts include economically important fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums, as well as various forest trees such as oaks, maples, and poplars. Vulnerable or stressed trees in orchards and urban landscapes are particularly prone to infestation.

The biology and lifecycle of the beetle involve an adult phase during the summer months, during which mating and oviposition occur. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the bark and eventually penetrate the woody tissues, where they develop by feeding on the cambium and xylem layers.

Infestation damage is primarily caused by larval tunneling, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients throughout the tree. Visible symptoms include dieback of branches, thinning of the canopy, and the accumulation of frass near the base of the trunk. Severe infestations often lead to the rapid decline and eventual death of the affected tree.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this wood-borer, as internal larvae are protected from external treatments. Effective control strategies include:

• Implementing regular field surveys to detect infested trees early.
• Sanitation, which involves the prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested trees.
• Using pheromone-based traps to monitor and reduce adult populations during the flight period.
• Applying systemic insecticides to the bark during the peak egg-laying season to prevent larval entry.
