Turkestan longhorn beetle

Taxonomic position. The Turkestan longhorn beetle (Trirachys sartus), frequently cited under the synonym Aeolesthes sarta, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that poses a serious threat to both urban forestry and agricultural orchard systems.

Host plants. The beetle is a polyphagous pest, capable of infesting a wide range of deciduous trees. Its primary hosts include elms, poplars, and willows, but it also causes severe damage to fruit trees such as apple, pear, apricot, and walnut. The pest thrives in varied environments, from dense forests to ornamental city landscapes.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this beetle typically spans two years. Adults emerge during the summer months to mate and oviposit in bark crevices. The larvae hatch and bore into the tree, constructing extensive galleries within the phloem and xylem. This cryptic behavior makes the initial stages of infestation difficult to detect from the outside.

Nature of damage and harm. By feeding on the cambium and wood, larvae disrupt the nutrient and water transport within the tree. This damage causes crown dieback, yellowing of leaves, and structural weakening. If the infestation is severe and left unmanaged, the tree eventually loses its vitality and becomes susceptible to secondary infections, often leading to rapid mortality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to suppress beetle populations:

• Regular phytosanitary inspections to identify and remove infested trees promptly.
• Proper disposal of infested wood before the emergence period of adults to prevent the spread.
• Application of trunk injections or systemic insecticides in high-value urban trees.
• Enhancing tree resistance through optimized irrigation and nutrient management.
• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle activity and density in infested areas.
