Trissolcus podisi

Trissolcus podisi is a highly specialized parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Scelionidae (order Hymenoptera). It is widely recognized in agronomy as one of the most effective natural enemies of pentatomid bugs, commonly known as stink bugs, which are notorious pests that damage various crops globally.

Regarding its biology, Trissolcus podisi is an egg parasitoid. The female wasp searches for egg masses of host bugs on host plants. Upon discovery, it inserts its own eggs directly into the eggs of the stink bug. The wasp larva then develops inside, consuming the contents of the host egg and effectively terminating the development of the pest.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host stink bugs. Once the wasp larva completes its development, it pupates inside the hollowed-out shell of the host egg. Soon after, an adult Trissolcus podisi emerges, ready to search for new egg masses to begin the reproductive cycle again, ensuring continuous pest pressure management.

This insect is crucial for protecting crops such as soybeans, corn, and various legumes. By reducing the number of nymphs that hatch and feed on crops, the wasp significantly decreases the damage to plant tissues, prevents yield loss, and helps maintain ecological balance within the agroecosystem without reliance on synthetic chemistry.
