Description
The genus Trogoderma belongs to the family Dermestidae, commonly known as skin beetles or carpet beetles. Within agricultural settings, these beetles are notorious as significant pests of stored products, with several species posing a severe economic threat to international grain trade and food security.
These pests infest a wide range of commodities, including cereal grains (wheat, barley, maize), oilseeds, pulses, dried fruits, and various processed grain products. Because they thrive in warm, arid environments, they are particularly problematic in large-scale grain silos and warehouses located in temperate to tropical climates.
The biological cycle of Trogoderma is highly specialized. Adults are generally short-lived and do not cause significant damage, whereas the larvae are voracious feeders. A key survival trait of these insects is their ability to enter a facultative diapause. In this state, larvae can remain dormant for months or even years, making them resistant to chemical treatments and starvation.
Damage is characterized by larvae consuming the germ and endosperm of the grain, leaving behind hollow shells and fine debris. A heavy infestation can lead to a total loss of commodity value, making the product unfit for human consumption due to contamination with larval exuviae and metabolic waste, which can also trigger allergic reactions.
