Systematic position
The large cabinet beetle (Trogoderma angustum) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. It is a significant stored-product pest known for causing economic losses to agricultural commodities stored in granaries, warehouses, and domestic environments.

Host crops and materials
This species is a generalist feeder (polyphage). It primarily infests cereal grains, processed cereal products (flour, meal), legumes, and oilseeds. Furthermore, it can feed on materials of animal origin, including dried insect collections, furs, hides, and wool, showing extreme flexibility in its nutritional choices.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are small, oval-shaped beetles covered in fine hairs. Development occurs within the substrate where the beetle feeds. Favorable conditions for rapid growth include temperatures between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius, under which the insect can complete its generation in a relatively short period.

Damage and harmfulness
The larval stage is responsible for the majority of the damage. Larvae bore into grains and stored goods, consuming them and causing contamination through excrement and cast skins. This feeding activity results in significant weight loss of the stored grain, a sharp decline in germination capacity, and contamination that makes the product unfit for human consumption.

Protection measures
Effective management of the large cabinet beetle requires a strategic approach:

• Thorough sanitation of storage facilities before introducing new stocks.
• Regular monitoring using pheromone traps to detect early infestations.
• Control of temperature and humidity levels inside storage units to inhibit development.
• Application of registered fumigants or residual insecticides when heavy infestation is detected.
• Storing goods in airtight, pest-resistant containers to prevent cross-contamination.
