Cabinet beetle

Trogoderma cavum

Description

The Cabinet beetle (Trogoderma cavum) belongs to the family Dermestidae within the order Coleoptera. It is a well-known stored-product pest that poses a significant threat to agricultural goods. Known for its adaptability, this species is capable of infesting various dried food products and raw agricultural commodities, making it a major concern for the global grain industry.

This beetle primarily attacks stored cereal grains, legumes, and oilseeds. Commodities such as wheat, corn, rice, and processed products like flour and cereal mixes are highly susceptible to its presence. Because of its small size and tendency to inhabit crevices, it can easily infest facilities undetected until a significant population is established.

The life cycle of Trogoderma cavum involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the primary cause of economic loss. Larvae are highly mobile and voracious feeders, capable of penetrating packaging materials. They prefer environments that are relatively dry, which often aligns with standard long-term storage conditions for grain.

Damage caused by this beetle includes weight loss of the grain and a reduction in the nutritional value and germination capacity of seeds. Infested grain is often filled with larval skins, frass (excrement), and webbing. This contamination leads to lower market value and, in severe cases, the entire stock may be deemed unfit for human or animal consumption due to health regulations.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Regular cleaning of storage areas to remove residual dust and grain debris.
  • Use of pheromone monitoring traps to detect early infestations.
  • Implementing fumigation protocols using registered gaseous insecticides.
  • Controlling environmental variables, such as maintaining low grain moisture levels.
  • Ensuring proper sealing of warehouse entry points to prevent pest migration.
