Description
The Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive pests of grain products and seeds, capable of causing massive economic losses in stored commodities due to its rapid reproduction and resilience.
This species is a highly adaptable feeder. It primarily infests cereals such as wheat, rice, barley, and maize. Beyond basic grains, it poses a severe threat to processed products including flour, noodles, malt, and dried animal products. Its presence in a warehouse can lead to the total loss of the stored inventory.
The biology of the Khapra beetle is characterized by its ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions. The larval stage is the most damaging phase of the life cycle. In situations where food is scarce or conditions are unfavorable, larvae exhibit a unique diapause state, allowing them to remain dormant for years while hiding in cracks and crevices, making detection and eradication extremely difficult.
The damage caused by these beetles is extensive. The larvae feed on the grain, often starting with the germ, which drastically reduces the nutritional value and viability of seeds for planting. Infested grain becomes contaminated with larval cast skins, hairs, and waste products, which can cause allergic reactions and make the product unfit for food or feed markets.
