Systematic position. Trogoderma inclusum, commonly known as the large cabinet beetle, belongs to the family Dermestidae within the order Coleoptera. This species is a significant pest of stored products, known for its persistence and ability to thrive in various indoor environments, including grain silos, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.

Host range and damage. The pest is a generalist feeder that affects a wide variety of stored commodities. It primarily infests cereal grains, flour, processed grain products, pulses, and oilseeds. In addition to agricultural crops, it is frequently found in dried fruits, nuts, animal feeds, and occasionally in insect collections or natural history specimens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are the most destructive phase and are characterized by their hairy appearance and longevity. They can enter a state of facultative diapause when environmental conditions are unsuitable, allowing them to remain hidden in cracks and crevices for extended periods until favorable conditions return.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The larvae feed internally on kernels, often leaving only the outer shell or skeletonized remains. Heavy infestations result in significant weight loss of the grain, contamination with cast skins and frass (waste), and the development of unpleasant odors. Infested grain often loses its germination capacity and commercial market value.

Control and protection measures. Managing Trogoderma inclusum requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Essential strategies include:

• Strict sanitation to remove grain debris and dust accumulation.
• Fumigation of storage facilities with approved gases to eliminate hidden populations.
