Varied carpet beetle

The varied carpet beetle (Trogoderma ornatum) is a significant pest of stored products belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. These insects are widely recognized for their ability to thrive in various indoor environments, causing damage to both botanical and zoological materials stored in warehouses, grain facilities, and even households.

This pest has a diverse diet and targets a wide range of commodities. Agricultural products such as cereals, legumes, flour, and various seeds are frequently infested. Furthermore, because of their ability to digest keratin, they also feed on wool, fur, leather, and dried meat products, posing a serious threat to seed collections and stored organic matter.

The biological cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larval stage is responsible for the majority of the damage caused. Trogoderma ornatum larvae are known for their resilience, capable of surviving for extended periods with little food and adapting to various humidity levels, which makes them difficult to eradicate once an infestation is established.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by larvae tunneling through grains and seeds, leading to total destruction of the interior structure. Infested stocks become contaminated with frass, cast larval skins, and webbing. This damage results in severe economic losses, rendering the affected products unsuitable for both human consumption and planting purposes.
