Khapra-like beetle Trogoderma sinistrum

Trogoderma sinistrum is a beetle species within the family Dermestidae (order Coleoptera). Like other members of the genus Trogoderma, this insect is recognized as a significant pest of stored agricultural products. Its ability to survive in environments with low moisture and limited food resources makes it a formidable adversary for grain storage facilities worldwide.

This pest infests a diverse array of stored commodities, primarily focusing on cereals, legumes, oilseeds, and processed cereal products. It is frequently found in flour mills, grain silos, and warehouses where dry goods are stored for extended periods. Due to its cryptic behavior, early detection of an infestation is often difficult until significant damage has already occurred.

The biology of Trogoderma sinistrum involves a complete metamorphosis. The larval stage is the most destructive, as the larvae feed voraciously on the stored material. They are known for their ability to enter a state of diapause under adverse conditions, allowing them to persist in empty facilities for long periods, waiting for new product to be introduced.
