Trogoderma sternale

Trogoderma sternale is a member of the family Dermestidae (Order Coleoptera). It is a well-known stored-product pest that poses a significant threat to agricultural goods, processed foods, and various materials stored in warehouses or silos globally.

The beetle primarily infests stored grain commodities, including wheat, corn, barley, and various legumes. Furthermore, it is capable of feeding on oilseeds, dried fruits, nuts, and processed food products, as well as animal-derived materials like dried meat and fur, making it a highly versatile and dangerous pest.

The life cycle of this beetle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most destructive, as the larvae are highly mobile and resilient. They are known for their ability to survive long periods of starvation and adapt to varying environmental conditions within stored produce.

The damage caused by Trogoderma sternale includes direct consumption of the germ and endosperm of the seeds. This leads to substantial loss in grain weight and complete destruction of seed viability. Additionally, the presence of larval skins and excrement degrades the quality of the product, often leading to total rejection of shipments.
