Powderpost beetle (Trogoxylon spinifrons)

Systematic position: Trogoxylon spinifrons is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Bostrichidae, and subfamily Lyctinae. These beetles are commonly known as powderpost beetles, recognized for their specialized ability to infest and digest stored dry timber.

Host plants and affected materials: This pest primarily targets hardwoods that contain sufficient starch content for larval development. Infestations are frequently found in lumber yards, furniture factories, and private homes, where they attack flooring, plywood, structural timbers, and various decorative wooden objects.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle begins when adult females lay eggs into the pores of susceptible wood. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow deep into the interior of the material, feeding and creating intricate galleries filled with fine, flour-like frass. The complete development cycle is influenced by environmental factors such as moisture and temperature, typically lasting several months.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The main damage is caused by the larvae, which destroy the structural integrity of the wood from within. External symptoms of infestation include tiny, pin-hole sized emergence holes and piles of fine, powdery dust on the surface of the wood. Left untreated, these infestations can lead to the collapse of wooden structures or the total destruction of furniture.
