The Chigger mite (Trombicula irritans) is a member of the Trombidiformes order and the Trombiculidae family. While primarily known for their impact on human health, in an agricultural context, these pests influence the management and safety protocols of garden and horticultural environments.
These mites do not consume plant tissue directly, but they thrive in overgrown areas, tall grasses, and shaded garden zones. Their presence is an indicator of poor site maintenance, as they rely on a humid microclimate provided by dense foliage to complete their development and survive the heat of the day.
The biological life cycle of Trombicula irritans consists of several stages: eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults. The larval stage is the most critical for management, as larvae migrate to the tips of leaves and stems to attach to passing hosts. This behavior makes them a significant nuisance during the active growing season.
The economic impact of this pest is primarily related to labor safety and land utility. When populations reach high densities, agricultural work, including harvesting fruits and vegetables, becomes hazardous. This necessitates the use of chemical controls that might otherwise be unnecessary, impacting the ecological balance of the site.
