Zebra longhorned beetle

The zebra longhorned beetle (Typocerus zebra) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles. It is easily identified by the distinct zebra-like pattern of yellow and black transverse bands on its elytra. As typical for the Lepturinae subfamily, these beetles are diurnal and are frequently observed feeding on nectar and pollen in flower-rich habitats.

This beetle primarily affects deciduous trees, with a strong preference for weakened, stressed, or dying specimens. Common hosts include oak, maple, chestnut, and other hardwoods. In managed environments, they often target trees that have suffered from environmental stress, mechanical damage, or previous infestations, making them indicators of declining tree health.

The life cycle begins with the female ovipositing eggs into bark crevices or wounds in the tree trunk. The larvae, which are the primary destructive stage, tunnel into the inner bark and sapwood. They spend a significant portion of their life cycle as larvae, feeding and creating galleries within the wood. The complete development from egg to adult beetle can span one or two years depending on environmental temperature and wood quality.

The damage caused by Typocerus zebra is characterized by internal larval tunnels that disrupt the vascular system of the host tree. This interference with nutrient and water transport leads to branch dieback, crown thinning, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the tree. Additionally, the boring activities facilitate the entry of pathogenic fungi, which further accelerate the deterioration of the tree's structural integrity.

Effective management strategies center on integrated forest and garden pest control. Prevention is key, which involves maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization, watering, and pruning to reduce susceptibility. When infestation occurs, it is critical to remove and dispose of heavily infested wood to prevent the spread of the population to neighboring trees. Targeted insecticide applications on trunks may be considered in nursery settings during the adult flight period.
