Forage mite

Tyrophagus longior

Description

Systematic position. The forage mite (Tyrophagus longior) belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Acaridae. It is a cosmopolitan species, highly adapted to living in various stored agricultural products, particularly where environmental conditions are suboptimal and moisture levels are elevated.

Affected crops. This mite infests a wide range of stored goods, including wheat, barley, oats, flour, legumes, dried fruits, and oilseeds. In horticultural settings, it is also known to infest bulbs, tubers, and various roots stored in humid warehouses, often contributing to secondary decay by pathogens.

Biology and life cycle. Tyrophagus longior thrives under conditions of high humidity (above 15% in grain moisture) and moderate temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C. Under ideal conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult is completed in less than two weeks. The mites are highly resilient and can enter a quiescent stage to survive short-term desiccation or temperature fluctuations.

Damage and economic impact. The mites primarily feed on the germ of the seed, causing a complete loss of germination potential. Furthermore, they contribute to the heating of grain piles, which promotes the growth of fungi and bacteria. The infestation leaves behind debris, allergens, and offensive odors, rendering the produce unsuitable for food, feed, or seed processing.

  • Maintenance of grain moisture content below 13-14% during storage.
  • Proper ventilation to prevent moisture accumulation and condensation.
  • Strict sanitation protocols for warehouses and transport equipment.
  • Regular monitoring of stored stocks for signs of heating or mite activity.
  • Use of approved fumigants for large-scale infestation management.

Control measures. Effective management depends on preventive hygiene. It is essential to ensure that storage facilities are dry, clean, and properly sealed. In cases of localized infestation, aeration or cooling of the grain mass can inhibit population growth. For severe infestations, professional fumigation is required to eliminate the mite population without compromising the quality of the stored produce.
