Palm mite

Tyrophagus palmarum

Description

Tyrophagus palmarum is a microscopic mite belonging to the family Acaridae and the order Sarcoptiformes. Known as a significant pest, this species thrives in environments with high humidity, making it a common threat in greenhouses, indoor plant collections, and storage facilities containing plant-based materials.

This pest has a wide range of host plants, including various ornamental palm species, orchids, vegetable seedlings, and diverse bulbous plants. It is also known to infest stored grain, seeds, and agricultural products, where its presence can lead to rapid degradation and loss of viability due to secondary mold development.

The life cycle of the mite is relatively short, allowing for multiple generations within a single growing season. Under optimal conditions—typically temperatures between 20°C and 25°C combined with high ambient humidity—the entire development cycle from egg to adult can be completed in approximately two weeks.

The damage caused by Tyrophagus palmarum is primarily due to feeding on soft plant tissues. Symptoms often include small pits or necrotic lesions on leaves, distortion of new growth, and rot in bulbs or tubers. When heavy infestations occur, the growth points of the plants can be completely destroyed.

  • Maintain optimal ventilation to reduce air and substrate humidity.
  • Perform regular sanitation of greenhouse tools and storage surfaces.
  • Carefully inspect incoming plant material for signs of infestation.
  • Apply specific acaricides targeting mite infestations when necessary.

Effective management requires a proactive strategy that emphasizes habitat modification. Since Tyrophagus palmarum relies heavily on moisture, controlling irrigation and improving air circulation are the most sustainable ways to suppress its population. In cases of severe outbreaks, chemical intervention must be applied with precision to reach all hidden areas of the plants.
