Description
Systematic position: The mould mite (Tyrophagus putrescentiae) belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Acaridae. It is a microscopic mite that acts as a significant stored-product pest, capable of damaging stored agricultural commodities as well as living plants in greenhouses.
Crops damaged: This pest has a wide host range. It infests cereal crops (wheat, rye, corn), oilseeds, pulses, as well as processed goods like flour, cereals, and animal feed. In greenhouse environments, the mite actively infests vegetable seedlings, ornamental plants, and mushroom cultures, causing severe damage to soft plant tissues.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Tyrophagus putrescentiae consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus), and adult stages. Mites are highly dependent on moisture; they require substrate moisture levels above 15% for active breeding. Under optimal temperatures (20°C to 30°C), a full generation cycle takes 7–15 days, allowing for rapid population explosions.
Damage and harmfulness: Mites primarily feed on the grain embryo, resulting in a total loss of seed germination potential. When infestations are high, the stored products develop a musty, pungent odor and become unfit for human or animal consumption due to mite debris and excreta. On live plants, they feed on tender foliage and stems, causing deformation, wilting, and plant death.
