Description

The sixteen-spot ladybird (Tytthaspis sedecimpunctata) is a member of the Coccinellidae family within the order Coleoptera. Unlike most ladybirds known for their predatory behavior, this specific species is primarily a mycophagous insect, but it often shifts to feeding on the epidermal tissues of various crops when natural fungal food sources are scarce.

This pest is primarily associated with cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. During outbreaks, large populations can congregate on the ears of grain crops, causing significant stress to the plants during the grain-filling stage, which directly correlates with yield losses and reduced agricultural produce quality.

The life cycle of the species consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within plant debris, leaf litter, or dry grassy areas near field margins.
