These beetles are recognized as forest pests due to their wood-boring larvae, which can cause significant structural damage to host trees, particularly in coniferous forests where they can reach damaging population levels.

The primary host trees for this pest are members of the Pinaceae family, most notably firs and spruces. While these beetles are often considered secondary pests that prefer stressed, diseased, or fallen timber, they can impact healthy trees if environmental conditions allow for a population outbreak, resulting in decline or death of the host.

The biology of Ulochaetes involves a complex life cycle, typically spanning one to two years depending on the climate. The life stages consist of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The larval stage is the most destructive, as they tunnel extensively beneath the bark and into the sapwood, feeding on the cambium layer to complete their development.
