Uracanthus is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These insects are recognized as significant pests of various trees and shrubs, particularly in regions where they colonize woody tissues. Their ability to bore into healthy or stressed wood makes them a challenging target for standard plant protection measures.

Systematically, Uracanthus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the subfamily Cerambycinae. Adult beetles are characterized by their elongated bodies and long antennae. The primary destructive phase is the larval stage, where the insects live and feed within the stems and branches of their host plants for extended periods.

The host range of Uracanthus includes a variety of ornamental and native tree species. Plants such as Acacia and several Myrtaceae members are frequently targeted. The damage is often internal, making the initial signs of infestation difficult to detect until the plant begins to show visible symptoms of decline, such as branch dieback or yellowing foliage.

The life cycle involves the adult female laying eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries. These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, often leading to the structural weakening of the branches. The duration of the cycle varies based on environmental factors and specific host susceptibility.

Managing Uracanthus requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to reduce population pressure:
