Description

The Cypress longicorn beetle (Uracanthus cupressianus) is a destructive wood-boring pest belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. This species is known for its specialized diet, focusing on the wood of coniferous trees, which makes it a significant concern for forestry and arboriculture.

This beetle primarily infests trees within the family Cupressaceae, including species of cypress, thuja, and juniper. These plants are often used in ornamental landscaping, making the impact of the infestation both economically damaging and aesthetically detrimental to garden design and urban forestry.

The biological cycle of the beetle is typical of wood-boring longhorns. Adult beetles emerge during the summer months to mate and deposit eggs within the bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the cambium and xylem layers of the host plant. They feed extensively within these tissues, disrupting the tree’s internal nutrient and water transport systems.

Evidence of damage includes the yellowing of foliage, premature leaf drop, and the death of individual branches or the entire tree. Infested trees often exhibit visible entry or exit holes accompanied by sap bleeding or fine sawdust, known as frass, gathering at the base of the tree. This damage makes the tree susceptible to secondary infections by fungi and other opportunistic pathogens.

Effective management requires a proactive approach including:

  • Regular inspection of the canopy for early signs of boreholes.
  • Pruning and destroying infested plant material to reduce pest pressure.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight period.
  • Promoting tree vigor through adequate irrigation and nutrient management to withstand larval stress.
