Ghost horntail

Urocerus fantoma

Description

The Ghost horntail (Urocerus fantoma) is a species of wood wasp belonging to the family Siricidae within the order Hymenoptera. It is recognized as a significant technical pest of coniferous timber, primarily targeting stressed or recently felled trees, causing economic losses in the forestry sector.

The primary hosts for this insect are coniferous species, most notably those within the genus Abies (firs), as well as spruce. The pest is frequently encountered in forest stands, logging sites, and timber yards where logs are stored, provided the conditions are suitable for larval development.

The life cycle of Urocerus fantoma involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female utilizes a specialized ovipositor to inject eggs deep into the wood of the host tree. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel extensively throughout the sapwood and heartwood, feeding on the wood tissue and causing internal structural degradation.

The damage caused by these insects is considered "technical," as the tunnels created by the larvae are tightly packed with wood dust (frass). This activity severely compromises the commercial value of the timber. Infestation is often only detected after adult wasps emerge, leaving behind visible, circular exit holes in the surface of the wood.

  • Prompt removal and processing of infested or dead trees from forest areas.
  • Debarking logs immediately after harvesting to prevent successful oviposition.
  • Biological control through the preservation of natural parasitoids and predators.
  • Strategic monitoring of timber stockpiles to prevent mass outbreaks of the pest.
