Yellow horntail

The yellow horntail (Urocerus xanthus) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Siricidae family. It is a significant technical pest of wood, primarily known for its ability to infest weakened or freshly felled conifer trees, causing substantial damage to timber quality.

The host range includes various coniferous species such as spruce, fir, and pine. Female wasps possess a strong ovipositor used to drill into the wood, where they deposit eggs along with symbiotic fungi. These fungi assist the larvae in digesting the cellulose as they burrow deep into the tree.

The life cycle of the yellow horntail is characterized by a prolonged larval stage that can last one or more years. Larval development is highly dependent on the moisture content and nutritional state of the wood, making freshly dead or stressed timber an ideal environment for population growth.

The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of perfectly circular exit holes, approximately 5–8 mm in diameter, on the surface of the timber. Internally, the larvae construct extensive galleries filled with frass, which severely degrades the structural integrity and market value of the affected logs and lumber.

• Prompt removal and processing of infested or wind-thrown trees.
• Debarking logs immediately after felling to prevent egg-laying.
• Maintaining proper log storage in dry, well-ventilated areas.
• Implementing pheromone traps for population monitoring during flight.
• Prioritizing sanitary logging to remove breeding sites from the forest.

Management strategies are focused on silvicultural practices rather than chemical treatments, as larvae are protected deep within the wood. Controlling the yellow horntail effectively requires sanitation—removing breeding grounds before the emergence of the next generation of adults to break the infestation cycle.
