Description

Systematic position: Varroa destructor is an ectoparasitic mite classified under the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Parasitiformes, and family Varroidae. It is universally recognized as the most significant biological threat to managed honey bee populations.

Crops and hosts: The parasite specifically targets the European honey bee (Apis mellifera). While not a direct pest of agricultural crops, the mite indirectly causes massive economic losses in plant production by destroying the primary pollinators required for high-yield fruit and seed set in many crops.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Varroa destructor is dependent on honey bee brood. Adult female mites enter a brood cell containing a bee larva just before it is capped. Once inside, the mite reproduces, feeding on the developing pupa, which allows the offspring to emerge as adults along with the host bee.

Damage and harmfulness: The mite feeds on the hemolymph (blood) of bees and pupae. This parasitism severely compromises the immune system of the colony, leads to physical deformities such as shriveled wings, reduces the lifespan of adult workers, and serves as a major vector for lethal honey bee viruses.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control and keeping mite populations below the damage threshold:

  • Application of acaricides (synthetic strips or organic acids).
  • Thermal treatment of colonies during the broodless period.
  • Physical removal of drone brood as a trap for mites.
  • Regular monitoring using sugar rolls or alcohol washes to assess infestation levels.
