Varroa wongsirii

Varroa wongsirii

Description

Varroa wongsirii is a specialized species of parasitic mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Varroidae. It is a natural parasite of the Asian honey bee, specifically Apis koschevnikovi. Unlike the more globally spread Varroa destructor, this species has evolved in specific environmental conditions in Southeast Asia, maintaining a unique biological relationship with its host.

The mite primarily affects the larval and pupal stages of honey bees. By invading brood cells, the parasite ensures access to a consistent food source—the bee's hemolymph. This parasitic interaction is highly specialized, allowing the mite to synchronize its life cycle precisely with the developmental stages of the host, which is critical for the survival and propagation of the mite colony.

The life cycle of Varroa wongsirii takes place within sealed brood cells. After the female mite enters the cell, she deposits eggs. As the bee larva undergoes metamorphosis, the mites develop through several stages, including protonymph and deutonymph, before maturing into adult mites. Upon the emergence of the adult bee, the newly matured female mites exit the cell, ready to infest new hosts.

The damage caused by these parasites is significant, leading to weakened bee populations and reduced colony productivity. Infested bees often exhibit developmental deformities, such as stunted wings and weakened immune systems, making them highly susceptible to secondary viral infections. Severe infestations can ultimately lead to the collapse of the honey bee colony if not managed effectively.

Effective management and control strategies are essential for maintaining healthy bee populations. Recommended practices include:

  • Regular monitoring of mite infestation levels within hives.
  • Application of approved acaricides or organic treatments during non-flow periods.
  • Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
  • Mechanical removal of drone brood to reduce the mite reproductive population.
