Varroa rindereri belongs to the family Varroidae, order Mesostigmata. It is an obligate ectoparasite that primarily targets honey bees (Apis spp.). The mite survives by feeding on the hemolymph of both adult bees and developing brood, serving as a significant biological stressor for colonies.
The host range of this parasite is restricted to honey bees. The mite's ability to thrive within the closed environment of the hive allows it to spread rapidly through drifting workers, the exchange of equipment, and the natural contact between bees in an apiary setting.
The life cycle of Varroa rindereri is closely linked to the developmental stages of the bee brood. A fertilized female mite enters a cell before it is capped. During the pupal stage of the bee, the mite reproduces, and the offspring attach themselves to the emerging bee, continuing the infestation cycle.
The damage caused by these mites includes the weakening of the host's immune system, wing deformities, and decreased lifespan of the worker bees. Left unmanaged, the infestation leads to a decline in honey production, increased susceptibility to secondary viral infections, and eventual colony collapse.
