Description

The Tomato russet mite, scientifically identified as Vasates lycopersici (syn. Aculops lycopersici), is a destructive member of the Eriophyidae family. Unlike spider mites, these pests are extremely small and invisible to the naked eye, often causing significant physiological damage before the infestation is detected by growers.

This mite primarily attacks solanaceous plants, causing severe economic damage to tomato, pepper, and eggplant crops. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where high temperatures and low humidity create ideal conditions for its rapid development and colonization of the plant tissue.

The biology of Vasates is characterized by an extremely short life cycle, which can be completed in less than a week under optimal conditions. The mite passes through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Because of their size and rapid reproduction, infestations often explode in population density within a very short timeframe during the summer season.

The damage is characterized by a "russeting" appearance on stems and leaves, starting from the lower parts of the plant and moving upwards. The leaves lose their healthy green color, turn bronze or brown, and eventually wither. Heavy infestations prevent the development of new leaves and cause fruit drop, significantly reducing total crop yield.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Implement strict sanitation practices to remove all debris from the growing area.
  • Regular monitoring of the lower canopy using a hand lens (10x magnification or higher).
  • Early application of appropriate acaricides following resistance management guidelines.
  • Controlling alternative hosts, especially solanaceous weeds, in and around the greenhouse.
