Blackcurrant gall mite

Vasates masseei, commonly referred to as the blackcurrant gall mite (often associated with Cecidophyopsis ribis), is a microscopic mite belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. It is a highly destructive pest that colonizes the buds of host plants, remaining hidden and protected inside throughout most of its life cycle.

The primary host for this pest is the blackcurrant bush, although red currants and gooseberries can also be affected. The damage caused by the mite is twofold: the physical destruction of buds due to feeding, and the transmission of the reversion virus, which causes sterility in the plant, leading to deformed flowers and the complete cessation of berry production.

The biology of the mite is synchronized with the development of the host plant. The mites overwinter inside the buds, where they reproduce rapidly during the spring. As the plant begins to bud and flower, the mites emerge from the infested buds to migrate to new growth. This migration period is facilitated by wind and insect vectors, allowing the infestation to spread throughout the entire plantation.

Visual identification of the pest is based on the appearance of enlarged, globular, or "galled" buds that fail to develop into healthy shoots. These misshapen buds are a clear signal of infestation. Over time, the cumulative impact leads to a decline in plant vigor, poor fruit set, and increased susceptibility to other environmental stressors, ultimately reducing the plantation's profitability.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the spread:

• Sourcing and planting healthy, virus-free nursery stock.
• Regular inspection of bushes in early spring and manual removal of any deformed buds.
• Pruning and destroying severely infested branches or bushes to prevent the spread of mites.
• Timing chemical applications, specifically acaricides, during the short window of migration at the start of the flowering period to effectively target exposed mites.
