Description

The hornet mimic hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) is a member of the family Syrphidae within the order Diptera. Noted for its impressive Batesian mimicry of the hornet Vespa crabro, this fly is commonly found in gardens and woodlands. While adults are primarily pollinators, the larvae have a complex relationship with their environment, often inhabiting environments where decaying organic matter is abundant.

The pest potential of Volucella zonaria is largely associated with its saprophagous behavior. In an agricultural context, it is considered a secondary pest that prefers already weakened or decaying plant material. It rarely attacks healthy, vigorous crops; however, it can become a problem in greenhouses or garden environments where hygiene is neglected and plant debris is allowed to accumulate.

The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in environments that will provide food for the larvae. Once hatched, the larvae utilize their mouthparts to process organic material. If a plant has suffered injury from other pests or environmental stress, the larvae may opportunisticly feed on the tissues, accelerating the decomposition and creating entry points for fungi and bacteria.

Damage caused by this species is usually localized. The primary concern is the potential for the larvae to bore into succulent plant tissues, such as bulbs or fleshy stems, when those tissues start to rot due to secondary infections. This damage leads to stunted growth, wilting, and eventually the total destruction of the affected plant tissue if not addressed promptly by the grower.

Management strategies focus on habitat modification and sanitation to prevent infestation:

  • Maintain high standards of garden and greenhouse sanitation by removing decaying organic debris.
  • Ensure proper soil drainage and ventilation to prevent rot in plant stems and roots.
  • Monitor for secondary pest damage that might attract egg-laying females.
  • Employ mechanical traps if adult population density reaches levels that pose a risk to vulnerable crops.
