Black horntail

Systematic position. The black horntail (Xeris spectrum) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Siricidae. It is a wood-boring insect widely recognized as a significant technical pest, affecting various coniferous tree species across Northern Hemisphere temperate forests.

Affected crops. This species primarily targets coniferous trees, with a strong preference for Spruce (Picea), Fir (Abies), and Pine (Pinus) species. While it typically colonizes stressed, dying, or recently felled timber, high population densities can lead to attacks on seemingly healthy trees, particularly in managed forests or areas affected by drought.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle usually spans one to two years, depending on environmental temperatures and wood moisture content. The female uses a robust ovipositor to deposit eggs deep into the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae bore through the xylem, creating extensive galleries and feeding on both the wood and the symbiotic fungi introduced by the female during oviposition.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Larval tunneling severely degrades the quality of timber, making it unsuitable for structural purposes or high-quality wood production. The boreholes are packed with tightly compressed frass, which provides a tell-tale sign of infestation. Over time, the internal damage caused by these larvae can lead to the structural failure of affected trees and significant economic losses for the timber industry.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Xeris spectrum. Key strategies include:

• Regular forest sanitation and removal of infested logs before insect emergence.
• Maintaining high tree vigor through proper forest management practices to reduce susceptibility.
• Utilization of natural enemies, particularly parasitic wasps, which exert biological control over horntail populations.
• Avoidance of leaving slash and debris in the forest, which serves as a breeding ground for wood-boring insects.
