Description
Systematic position. Xylotoles is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles), within the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as wood-boring pests, as their life cycle is inherently linked to the health of woody tissues. Members of this genus are recognized for their impact on various forest trees and ornamental shrubbery, playing a significant role in forest and orchard ecosystems as both decomposers and pests.
Host plants. The primary targets of Xylotoles are various broad-leaved trees and woody shrubs. These beetles tend to infest weakened or stressed trees, although they can also attack healthy plants under favorable conditions. They pose a notable threat to fruit orchards, citrus plantations, and urban landscape trees, boring into trunks and major branches which compromises the structural integrity and vitality of the vegetation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Xylotoles consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit their eggs into crevices in the bark or existing wounds on the tree. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the bark and the wood below, creating tunnels within the sapwood and heartwood. The larval stage is often long-lasting, potentially spanning several years, during which the insect feeds and grows before undergoing pupation inside the tree.
Damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by larvae, which sever vascular tissues, thereby disrupting the tree's internal nutrient and water transport systems. This leads to branch dieback, general stunted growth, and in severe infestation cases, the eventual death of the tree. Visible symptoms include the presence of frass (a mixture of sawdust and excrement) on the bark surface and around the base of the tree, along with exit holes and yellowing foliage.
Control measures. Controlling Xylotoles is challenging due to the cryptic, internal feeding nature of the larvae. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach: maintaining orchard sanitation, pruning and burning infested wood to reduce population density, and ensuring optimal tree health to increase natural resistance. Targeted treatments include:
- Injecting systemic or contact insecticides into larval tunnels.
- Deploying pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult population levels.
- Applying preventive bark sprays to deter egg-laying by adult females.
