Antelope longhorn beetle

Systematic position. The Antelope longhorn beetle (Xylotrechus antilope) is a member of the order Coleoptera and belongs to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This species is a specialist wood-boring insect that targets weakened deciduous trees as a substrate for its larval development.

Host plants. The primary hosts include various deciduous tree species, most notably oak, beech, hornbeam, and chestnut. In certain environments, the beetle may also colonize ornamental trees and fruit species that have been subjected to environmental stress, poor health, or mechanical injuries.

Biology and life cycle. Adult beetles are active during the summer months, specifically between June and August. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and sapwood, creating intricate galleries. They typically overwinter as larvae within the wood, pupating the following spring or early summer before emerging as adults.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the cambium and outer sapwood, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the tree. Severe infestations lead to tree decline, dieback, and reduced timber quality. Furthermore, the presence of these beetles makes host trees more susceptible to further attacks by other secondary pests and pathogens.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Xylotrechus antilope populations:

• Implementation of strict sanitary logging to remove infested and dying trees before beetle emergence.
• Prompt disposal of logging residues and deadwood that could provide breeding grounds.
• Promoting overall tree vigor through proper irrigation, fertilization, and soil management.
• Periodic monitoring of high-value trees to detect early signs of infestation and mitigate spread.
