Javanese xylotrechus

The Javanese xylotrechus (Xylotrechus javanicus) is an insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This species is a dangerous xylophage capable of causing significant damage to woody plants, thereby reducing their vigor and contributing to the degradation of both forest and orchard stands.

This pest primarily attacks broad-leaved tree species, including various fruit-bearing crops. While most frequently reported in the Asian region, the risks of its spread to new cultivation zones are high due to global timber trade, making it a subject of concern for agricultural quarantine services worldwide.

The biology of this pest follows a complete life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles deposit their eggs into crevices in the bark or existing mechanical wounds on trunks. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the phloem and sapwood, where they bore winding galleries, feeding on plant tissues and disrupting nutrient transport within the tree.

A key indicator of Xylotrechus javanicus infestation is the accumulation of "frass" (sawdust-like wood particles) at the base of the trunk, along with visible entry holes in the bark. Heavy infestation often leads to the dieback of branches or the total mortality of the tree if the larvae girdle the stem. The damage is further compounded by secondary infections and fungal diseases that enter through the larval galleries.

Control measures require a multi-faceted strategy:

• Sanitary pruning and removal of infested trees.
• Maintaining optimal horticultural practices to improve tree resistance.
• Application of contact insecticides during the adult flight period.
• Proper sealing of bark wounds to prevent oviposition.
• Monitoring of wood imports to contain the pest spread.
