Namangan longhorn beetle

The Namangan longhorn beetle (Lat. Xylotrechus namanganensis) belongs to the Cerambycidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is a significant technical pest of wood, primarily found in Central Asia and adjacent regions. The adult beetle is characterized by a moderate size and a distinctive mottled pattern on its elytra, typical of this genus.

The primary hosts of this pest are various fruit trees, with apricot, apple, and other stone fruits being particularly susceptible to infestation. The larvae of the beetle lead a cryptic lifestyle, boring tunnels directly beneath the bark and deep into the wood, which makes early detection extremely difficult for orchard managers and agronomists.

The biology of Xylotrechus namanganensis is closely linked to the physiological state of the host tree. The pest typically targets weakened, damaged, or aged trees; however, under high population density, it can also attack relatively healthy specimens. The complete development cycle of the pest ranges from one to two years, depending on environmental temperature and substrate availability.

The damage caused by this insect involves numerous exit holes in the bark and galleries bored into the sapwood and heartwood, which disrupt the plant's vascular system. This leads to premature branch dieback, significant yield loss, and eventually the death of the tree. Frass (boring dust) produced by larvae often accumulates within bark fissures or at the base of the trunk.

Integrated pest management strategies include sanitation pruning and removal of infested branches, timely scraping of dead bark, and whitewashing tree trunks. To control populations, it is recommended to deploy pheromone traps during the adult flight season and apply systemic insecticides at the beginning of the growing season when adults emerge for mating and oviposition.
