The four-spotted longhorn beetle (Xylotrechus quadrimaculatus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the Cerambycidae family. This pest primarily targets broadleaf tree species and can become a significant problem in environments where trees are already experiencing stress due to climatic factors or poor site conditions.

The species primarily affects trees such as birch, alder, and beech. It is categorized as a secondary pest, meaning it usually selects trees that are weakened, damaged, or undergoing a period of physiological decline, although high population densities can lead to attacks on seemingly healthy specimens.

The life cycle of the beetle involves the deposition of eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating intricate galleries in the sapwood and inner bark. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, which is critical for the tree's survival and growth.

The damage caused by these beetles is often severe, leading to structural instability and crown dieback. Early signs of infestation include the appearance of frass (boring dust) near the base of the tree, small circular emergence holes in the bark, and general thinning of the canopy as the tree loses its vigor.
