Wavy-marked wood borer

Xylotrechus undulatus

Description

Systematic position: The Wavy-marked wood borer (Xylotrechus undulatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is recognized as a significant technical pest of wood, causing substantial damage to coniferous forests, especially spruce stands.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are coniferous trees. While spruce is the most commonly infested species, fir and sometimes pine can also serve as hosts. The beetle prefers weakened, fallen, or freshly cut trees, but during population outbreaks, it may also attack and colonize healthy-looking living trees.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the beetle typically spans one to two years, depending on regional climatic conditions. Adult emergence occurs during the summer months. Females lay their eggs in bark crevices or mechanical wounds on the stem. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the bark, constructing winding galleries that penetrate deeper into the sapwood and heartwood, where pupation eventually takes place.

Nature of damage and pest importance: The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which bore extensive galleries through the wood, disrupting the vascular system of the tree. This results in the physiological decline of the tree, reduced timber quality, and, in cases of severe infestation, rapid tree mortality. A diagnostic sign of an active infestation is the accumulation of fine wood dust (frass) at the base of the trunk.

Control measures: Effective management of the pest involves several silvicultural and sanitary strategies:

  • Prompt harvesting and removal of infested timber before the emergence of the next generation of adults.
  • Cleaning forest areas of windfalls and broken trees that act as breeding reservoirs.
  • Utilization of trap trees to divert beetle populations away from healthy stands.
  • Biological control by promoting natural enemies and targeted insecticide applications in high-risk areas.
