Xystrocera

Xystrocera is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that primarily infest deciduous trees. The most widely recognized species, Xystrocera globosa, is a significant threat to forestry and urban ornamental plantations in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

The host range of these beetles is quite diverse, often targeting species of the Fabaceae family, such as Acacia and Albizia, as well as various fruit-bearing trees. The larvae typically attack weakened or stressed trees, though high populations can also infest seemingly healthy individuals, leading to rapid deterioration of the plant tissue.

The biological cycle begins when females deposit eggs within bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the inner bark and cambium layer. They spend their entire larval stage feeding on the wood, creating extensive galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the tree. After several molts, the larvae pupate inside the wood before emerging as adults.

The damage caused by Xystrocera is often severe and cumulative. Early symptoms include sap exudation, frass (boring dust) accumulation around the base, and yellowing foliage. As the galleries expand, the tree loses structural integrity and moisture transport is severely hindered, leading to branch dieback and eventual tree mortality.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Monitoring tree health to identify signs of infestation at an early stage.
• Removing and destroying heavily infested trees to prevent further spread.
• Improving tree vigor through appropriate irrigation and nutrient management.
• Applying contact or systemic insecticides during the adult flight period.
• Implementing integrated pest management practices to favor natural predators.
