Honeysuckle sawfly

The honeysuckle sawfly (Zaraea inflata) is a member of the Cimbicidae family within the order Hymenoptera. It is a specialized pest that exclusively targets honeysuckle plants (Lonicera spp.). As an agronomic concern, this insect is known for its potential to cause severe foliage loss, thereby weakening the vigor and health of both ornamental and fruit-bearing shrubs.

The biological cycle of Zaraea inflata involves a complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in spring, coinciding with the initiation of plant growth. Females use their saw-like ovipositor to insert eggs into leaf tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae (often referred to as false caterpillars) begin to feed voraciously. After completing their development, they drop to the soil to pupate and remain in a cocoon during the winter months.

This pest exclusively damages members of the Caprifoliaceae family, specifically the genus Lonicera. The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the leaf tissue. A heavy infestation can lead to rapid defoliation, which impairs the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, significantly weakening the plant's overall system.

Damage symptoms are characterized by irregular feeding patterns on leaf margins that progress inward, eventually leading to skeletonized leaves. When the population density of Zaraea inflata is high, the impact can be devastating, resulting in stunted growth, poor flower bud formation for the following season, and a notable decrease in berry yield for productive varieties.

Effective management strategies against this pest include:

• regular monitoring of foliage during the spring growth flush;
• manual removal of larvae from small plants where infestation is light;
• autumn soil cultivation to disrupt the overwintering pupal stages;
• the use of selective, low-toxicity insecticides during the larval stage if thresholds are exceeded;
