Zeuzera conferta moth

Zeuzera conferta belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Cossidae. It is a wood-boring pest that poses a significant challenge to arboriculture due to the cryptic nature of its larvae, which tunnel deep into the woody tissues of host plants, making them inaccessible to many contact insecticides.

The primary hosts of Zeuzera conferta are fruit trees, including various species within the Rosaceae family such as apples and pears. Additionally, this pest can infest a range of ornamental woody plants, potentially causing widespread damage in managed landscapes and nurseries if left uncontrolled.

The life cycle involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit near buds or bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the plant stems or trunks. They remain inside the wood throughout their larval development, constantly excavating tunnels while feeding on the internal tissues, which eventually compromises the structural integrity of the tree.

Damage is characterized by the sudden wilting of terminal shoots, the presence of exit holes in the bark, and sawdust-like frass accumulating at the base of the tree. The infestation disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to reduced yield, limb dieback, and in cases of severe infestation, the eventual death of the host tree.

Managing Zeuzera conferta requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize damage:

• Pruning and destroying infested branches as soon as symptoms appear.
• Direct injection of systemic insecticides into the larval galleries.
• Sealing entry wounds with horticultural protective pastes.
• Deploying pheromone traps to monitor adult moth activity and timing.
• Maintaining vigorous tree growth through proper irrigation and fertilization.
