Soybean stem weevil

Zygrita diva

Description

Zygrita diva is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species, commonly known as the soybean stem weevil, specializes in damaging leguminous crops, with soybean being the primary host. It is considered a major economic threat in regions where soybean cultivation is intensified.

The pest primarily affects soybean plants by targeting the stems. Unlike many leaf-feeding insects, Zygrita diva larvae thrive inside the plant tissues, which provides them with a high level of protection against natural enemies and traditional surface-applied pesticides. This cryptic habit makes it a challenging pest to manage effectively.

The life cycle begins when adult females deposit eggs into the stems of soybean plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the pith, where they complete their development. The internal feeding disrupts the structural integrity of the stem and interferes with the transport of water and nutrients, which is crucial for the development of the pods and seeds.

In terms of economic impact, the infestation leads to reduced plant vigor, stunting, and significantly increased lodging. When stems are weakened by internal tunneling, they become prone to breaking under wind pressure or during the harvesting process, leading to substantial yield losses that can be difficult to quantify until the time of harvest.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices:

  • Rotation with non-host crops to break the life cycle.
  • Deep tillage after harvest to bury and destroy larvae and pupae in crop residues.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak egg-laying period of adults.
  • Regular field scouting to monitor the presence of adults and early damage signs.
  • Selecting resistant soybean cultivars that can tolerate or deter stem colonization.
