1,2-Dibromoethane, commonly referred to in industrial chemistry as ethylene dibromide (EDB), is a synthetic organobromine compound that has historically served as a vital tool in agricultural pest management. As a volatile liquid, it was primarily utilized as a soil fumigant designed to penetrate the soil matrix effectively and neutralize subterranean pests that threaten agricultural productivity.

The chemical is classified as a fumigant, specifically serving as a powerful nematocide and insecticide. Its main role in agronomy was to eliminate nematodes, soil-dwelling insects, and other pests that cause significant damage to crop root systems. By lowering the population density of these organisms prior to planting, it allowed for healthier crop establishment and prevented major yield losses in high-value agricultural sectors.

The biological mode of action involves the alkylation of DNA and protein structures within the pest organism.
