Ipsdienol (2-methyl-6-methylene-2,7-octadien-4-ol) is a terpenoid alcohol that functions as a powerful aggregation pheromone. In forestry and plant protection, it serves as a semiochemical used to manipulate the behavior of specific wood-boring insects, facilitating their management through non-toxic chemical signaling.

The mechanism of action involves the release of synthetic pheromones that mimic the natural odor profile produced by male bark beetles. This chemical signal attracts both males and females to specific locations, typically pheromone-baited traps, effectively disrupting the colonization of healthy trees in the vicinity.

Ipsdienol is primarily applied in coniferous forest management to target bark beetle species of the Ips genus. By utilizing this compound, foresters can effectively perform mass trapping or monitoring programs, which are essential components of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to prevent large-scale timber loss.

Practical application requires strategic placement of dispensers within funnel or window traps. Operators must ensure that trap placement occurs before the primary emergence of the beetle population.
